PARTNERS IN HEALTH; A BRIEF HISTORY

1987: MacArthur Award winner Dr.Paul Farmer establishes Partners In Health in Haiti. Since then Partners In Health (known in Haiti as Zanmi Lasante) has intensively addressed the health care needs of the poorest residents in Haiti.

Zanmi Lasante hospitals and clinics currently serve more than 1.1 million Haitians a year.

Their activities include schools, clinics and a training program for health outreach workers. Zanmi Lasante operates a mobile unit that screens residents of area villages for preventable diseases.

Their hospitals contain HIV/TB isolation facilities, a wing for emergency surgeries and C-sections, and, in collaboration with the Haitian Red Cross, a modern blood banking facility.

Partners In Health/Zanmi Lasante HIV Equity Initiative provides antiretroviral therapy to as many patients as possible using its community-based model.

In addition to the 1993 MacArthur award, Partners in Health has received a $44.7 million dollar grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to fund Tuberculosis research and treatment efforts in Haiti

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria has endorsed Partners In Health / Zamni Lasante's Haiti operational plan. Methods first developed by PIH/ZL in the squatter settlements of central Haiti have been applied in poor communities worldwide.

Stand By Haiti
Nearly two months ago today, an enormous earthquake in Port-au-Prince, Haiti took the lives of more than 230,000 men, women, and children. All of the government buildings were destroyed, in addition to many homes, national landmarks and historic treasures. Amid the chaos of the physical destruction, we have witnessed many acts of courage, generosity and cooperation. The response from around the world has been heartening, and we have been privileged to work with many wonderful partners.

But we know that public attention won’t stay on Haiti for long, as new stories and new causes take over the headlines.

Partners In Health is committed to standing with Haiti now and in the months and years to come, in the communities that have long been our home and in the capital city now working to rebuild itself.

Please accept my and all of our thanks for your support of Partners In Health and of the Haitian people. And please join us as we continue to Stand With Haiti.

Gratefully,

Paul Farmer
